I am a painter working in oil and watercolor from photos that I shoot myself. After finishing the graduate program at the School of Visual Arts in New York City in 2001, I have lived in many warm and sunny places and now find myself in cool Connecticut. We moved to San Diego, then Guantanamo Bay, then Charleston, and finally Norwich.
My paintings reflect each new location. I am concerned with light, texture, and even history and our place in it.
I decide what to paint as I sort and crop through photos that I shoot candidly and daily. Simple changes effect my choices as a painter. For example since my daughter learned to walk and run, she is out of arms reach more often. The point of view of my paintings changed from a tight nose-to-nose perspective to one from a greater distance. Paintings made during the first two years of my daughter’s life are small and reflect my colorful domesticity. This issue of feeling domestic has been an interesting reckoning for me. I am surprised to find how my life is enriched. I work honestly, seriously, and consistently. We are all hoping that each new piece of art advances us further away from common and toward really good. Although, a good friend once wished that I never be confident but always strive to be better. This is good advice.
